How to Create like a Genius!
Guiding Concepts
- Students will gain knowledge on how to apply short term goals.
- Student will understand the meaning of long term goals and short term goals.
Discussion Board
A class discussion can be implemented to start off this learning segment. Ask the following question: "What is the difference between a long term goal and a short term goal?" Record student responses.
Evaluation Tools
Next, go into further detail explaining to the students that long term goals are goals you plan to achieve over a longer period of time (one semester, one year, five years, etc.) and a short term goals are goals you plan to achieve in the near future (the next day, in a week, in a month). Next ask students to share some ideas on on what they think some long and short term goals of their project will be. After hearing students responses, explain to the students that their long term goal is completing this project and they they will be expected to set even shorter goals, within the hour of Genius. Also explain to them that the reason for this is to ensure they are using their time wisely (because an hour goes by faster than they think) and also to ensure they complete their project in the required amount of time, which is two weeks.
3-2-1 and Self-Assessments
3-2-1 is commonly used as a reading strategy, but I changed it around to help my student stay on track with their hourly goals during Genius Hour. I wanted a quick but efficient tool to help guide the students within their own planning. Every hour before students start working on their project, they are required to fill out their "3-2-1" sheets. Students generally have one minute to gather with their groups, two minutes to discuss as a group their where are are within their project and what still needs to be done, and then 3 minutes to write down their goals and tasks for the hour. I also have students complete a self-assessment on how they felt they did during Genius hour using the same strategy. Students have one minute to rate themselves, two minutes to explain why they gave themselves that score, and three minutes to write down if they met their goals, why or what not, and possibles for the following Genius Hour.
